John Elton Thornton was born in Sheffield, Lennox County, Ontario and lived in Tamworth when he joined the 33rd Battery CFA at Kingston in December, 1915. He served on the Western Front with the CFA but was diagnosed with delusional insanity, catatonic dementia and invalided back to Canada for further medical treatment. He passed away in June 1947 and is buried in Woodland Cemetery,
